Try-Outs

Try-outs for the TTU Ranch Horse Team are held annually in October at the Equestrian Center.┬áThe tryout procedure consist of ranch pleasure, reining and working cow horse followed by a short interview by the panel of judges. For more information about making the team, please contact Coach Chance O’Neal. Below is the pattern required for try-outs.

 

1. Pleasure Portion

  1. Enter through north gate of arena.
  2. Walk to first marker
  3. Trot to second marker
  4. Extended trot to third
  5. Pick up left lead around south end of arena to fourth marker.
  6. Transition down to a trot to center of arena to start reining pattern.

2. Reining Portion

  1. Trot to center of arena and stop.
  2. Complete three spins to the left. Hesitate.
  3. Complete three spins to the right. Hesitate.
  4. Begin on left lead and lope two circles to the left(The first circle small and slow; second circle large and fast), change leads.
  5. Lope two circles to the right (The first circle small and slow; second circle large and fast), change leads.
  6. Begin a large circle to the left but do not close this circle. Run down the left side of the arena past the center marker and do a right roll back at least 20 feet from the wall or fence, no hesitation.
  7. Continue back around the previous circle but do not close this circle. Run down the right side of the arena past the center marker and do a left roll back at least 20 feet from the wall or fence, no hesitation.
  8. Continue back around previous circle but do not close this circle. Run down the left side of the arena past the center marker and do a sliding stop at least 20 feet from the wall or fence. Back up at least 10 feet. Hesitate to show completion of pattern.
